Who Is HANS?
HANS isn't a who, it's a what! This innovative safety device is the brainchild of both Dr. Robert Hubbard, an engineering professor at Michigan State University, and his brother in law, Jim Downing. HANS stands for Head and Neck Support. The HANS device is made from a carbon fiber composite. This device sits on the drivers shoulders and is coupled to his helmet by tethers. It is then secured to the driver by his shoulder belts and thereby becomes an integral part of the restraint system.
